Earlier this year, the iPhone seceded its position as the bestselling smartphone to Samsung's Galaxy S4.
Next week, we will have a whole new iPhone announcement to fawn over, but in the meantime, we will have to make due with speculation, and there is plenty of that to go around. According to a report from ZDNet, Apple may currently be testing new iPhone models in a range of different screen sizes, some that could measure as large as six inches diagonally.
Apple is poised to make its annual batch of fall announcements at its Cupertino headquarters this coming Tuesday, September 10. The event has long been expected to feature the debut of the new iPhone – the iPhone 5S – but what form that phone would take has remained largely under wraps until this latest bit of news. The story, initially broken by the Wall Street Journal, theorizes that Apple’s new iPhone line could be a bit more expansive than the previous one-size-fits-all development pattern that Apple has been known for. How many different incarnations of the new iPhone Apple will announce remains to be seen, but the Wall Street Journal report speculates that the sizes will range from 4.8 inch displays all the way to six-inch screens.
The variations in screen size could be another move from Apple aimed at recapturing a larger market share within the smartphone world. Earlier this year, the iPhone seceded its position as the bestselling smartphone to Samsung’s Galaxy S4, and Apple’s sales have generally dwindled across all product sectors as the company has plateaued a bit in sheer product innovation. Having multiple different phone sizes will help the iPhone 5S to appeal to a wider demographic of users, while Apple’s previous plans to introduce both a normal high-end model and a budget version of the new iPhone will make the new phone even more versatile.
Certainly, Apple is paying attention to the success that Samsung has had in offering phones that bridge the gap between smartphone and tablet in size and screen display. Both the 4.8 and six-inch screens would be a substantial step up from the smaller designs that Apple has put forth on their iPhone models in the past. The current iPhone 5 has the biggest display of any iPhone model at 4 inches, while the iPhone 4 and 4S – still popular phone models despite being several years old – boast a 3.5-inch screen. Even Samsung’s Galaxy, one of the larger smartphones on the market, tops out at a five-inch display. Needless to say, a six-inch iPhone would put Apple at the top of the game as far as phone sizes are concerned.
