Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of hCG in a woman’s urine.
Craigslist is the go-to place for a variety of purchases, from furniture to electronics to real estate. Almost anything can be sold on the website and, according to the Daily Mail, women are even selling positive pregnancy tests. All over the site and its numerous local regions, there are plenty of buyers and sellers of these tests.
In Buffalo, NY, an expectant mother is selling her tests for $25 each. Another posting, in the Washington, DC area, has a seven-month pregnant woman offering positive tests for $30 each or her urine for use in a fresh test for $20. The seller suggests using these items as a joke on a family member, spouse, or ex. Craigslist also lists three other positive pregnancy tests for sale in the DC area.
These sales raise obvious concerns about the impact that a positive pregnancy tests could have. The Daily Mail points to one ad that suggests using the pregnancy test as a way to finally get a boyfriend to propose. Another buyer was motivated to purchase as a means of seeking revenge on an ex-boyfriend that cheated and got his receptionist pregnant.
ABC News notes that sellers are attempting to release themselves of any liability. A woman in Ohio says that she takes no responsibility after the test is sold and assumes no obligations for the results. One seller in Florida promises not to ask questions, stating that it is not her business why the test is being purchased. Users and moderators of Craigslist have flagged and removed many of the ads, but plenty remain that have yet to be taken down.
Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman’s urine, reports Baby Center. After the fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus, the placenta produces the hormone and it enters the bloodstream. The longer after a period does not come as expected, the more accurate that a home pregnancy test is. Some tests, particularly newer ones, are more sensitive than others. The more sensitive tests are able to detect lower levels of the hormone.
In addition to positive pregnancy tests, the Daily Mail identifies a number of other fertility items that are for sale on Craigslist. Women are selling frozen breast milk for as little as $1 per ounce, offering options for women that are unable or unwilling to produce their own breast milk. Though illegal, it is even possible to find fertility drugs used for IVF well below market price. The authenticity of these drugs is questionable, and experts caution against purchase.
