A new dinosaur is discovered.
It seems scientists have unearthed a new dinosaur in the deserts of Utah.
According to a newly published report, scientists have unearthed a big-nosed, long-horned dinosaur in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. The plant-eating dinosaur is one of the largest of its species every discovered. The massive creature lived roughly 76 million years ago, and it is thought to part of the ceratopsid group, which also includes the Triceratops.
The dinosaur, a new species of triceratops, was reportedly discovered as part of a massive fossil collection pulled from the deserts of Utah. Scientists say it shows a creature with longhorns and a massive nose.
“It has the biggest nose and the longest horns of any of the ceratopsids,” said study co-author Mark Loewen, a paleontologist at the University of Utah. “It’s the Texas Longhorn of the ceratopsids.”
The dinosaur was fairly large, according to paleontologists. The dinosaur was a wide-bodied plant-eater that may have grown to be as large as 15 feet long and weighed 2 and a half tons.
Scientist name the new species Nasutoceratops titusi, which translates to big-nosed horn face. Despite the enlarged nose, scientists say they do not believe it had an enhanced sense of smell. Paleontologists say the discovery could show how dinosaurs evolved over time and it may provide insight regarding how dinosaurs mated.
The finding is one of just many for the Utah desert. The area once was a shallow sea that split North America in two. The region has been the site of a number of amazing discoveries, including those of Tyrannosaurus rex.
The bones of the dinosaur were discovered nearly seven years ago in 2006. Since then, the team has studied the fossilized remains in an attempt to confirm whether the dinosaur is different from its close relatives.
The study is published in the latest edition of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
