New York City adds Wi-Fi service to 32 parks

More parks in NYC will get wireless.

New York City added Wi-Fi services to 32 city parks on Tuesday, part of an agreement with a number of cable providers that will seek to expand the city’s wireless internet options considerably in the coming years.

Current broadband customers of Time Warner Cable, Cablevision Systems, Comcast, Cox Communications, and Bright House Networks will be able to access the new Wi-Fi networks for free (and without limit) on their laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Other users will still be able to access the Wi-Fi, but will only be allowed free access for three 10-minute blocks each month. Those Cable-less users will also have the option of buying the service on a day-to-day basis for a fee of 99 cents per device.

Naturally, city officials are excited about the development.

“This initiative expands WiFi service to millions of New Yorkers and visitors in some of our city’s most beautiful and historic sites,” said Rahul Merchant, New York City’s chief information and innovation officer.

Among the 32 new Wi-Fi inclusive areas are Bryant Park, Madison Square Park, and Riverside Park in Manhattan and Gravesend Park, Steeplechase Park, and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn. The 32 new parks are not the first public areas in NYC to gain wireless internet access, however. The full list of public wireless hotspots shows 51 New York City parks that are now endowed with Wi-Fi–including parts of the sprawling Central Park–and that number will continue to grow thanks to an agreement between the city and two key cable companies.

The agreement came together in 2011, bringing Time Warner and Cablevision into a contract with the city that assures a well-maintained and updated citywide Wi-Fi system through 2020. The money to install the new wireless hotspots comes from a $10 million fund the two companies put together after the contract came to life, and most of it will be spent in bringing Wi-Fi access to public areas both in Manhattan and outside of it.

In addition to Time Warner and Cablevision, there are also a number of spots throughout the city where the free wireless internet is provided by AT&T. Unlike with the other providers, AT&T’s hotspot locations are free and open to all users on an infinite basis, regardless of broadband service provider. While AT&T does not have the volume of Wi-Fi locations that Time Warner and Cablevision do, many  New Yorkers will still be able to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi. AT&T locations include a trio of hotspots in Central Park, one at Battery Park, and several others spread throughout the city’s five boroughs.
