Message in a bottle finds its way home to mother of deceased sender

The message inside the bottle read simply "Be Excellent To Yourself Dude."

Ten years ago, Sidonie Fery tossed a bottle containing a message into the ocean from Long Island. Sidonie tragically passed away in the fall of 2010, but crews cleaning up the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in December discovered the bottle among the storm debris and returned it to Sidonie’s grieving mother.

Sidonie’s tragic death occurred during a picnic at a Swiss boarding school. Her and a friend disappeared during the picnic and it was later discovered that they had both fallen from a cliff.

Sidonie’s mother, Mimi Fery, told the Daily News, “I think it’s a message of human kindness.”

Sidonie tossed the bottle into the ocean ten years ago while visiting family friends in Patchogue. Inside the bottle was the message, a quote from her favorite movie. The only other text written on the note was a phone number for the family’s midtown apartment.

The message inside the bottle read simply “Be Excellent To Yourself Dude,” which is a quote from the movie ‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures.”

In December, Mimi received a call with an excited message on her answering machine that said, “We found a message in a bottle. Be excellent to yourself, Dude!” She quickly connected the message with her daughter before she returned the call.

During her interview with the Daily News, she recalled, “I was sobbing, sobbing, sobbing. I told him my daughter died. I said, ‘I want to come pick up the bottle.'”

A few days later, parks and recreation workers met her at the train station to return the bottle and took the grieving mother to the beach where it was found.

Mimi will be returning the bottle to Long Island on Saturday, for a ceremonial unveiling of a plaque honoring her daughter and the long delayed message.

Director of Suffolk County Parks and Recreation, Maria Giustizia told the Daily News, “To find a glass bottle, totally undisturbed, under all of that was unbelievable.”
