Japanese motor company unveils electric scooter with iPhone connector

A new toy is created.

From clock radios to cars to stereo systems, it seems like everything these days has a connection or dock built for hooking up to an iPod or iPhone. In the western world, the iPhone connections are frequently used for their music playing capabilities or for hands-free phone calls. In South East Asia, however, where built-in GPS systems aren’t the ubiquitous presence in vehicles that they are here, smartphones are starting to serve as the definitive outlet for navigation maps and other location services. And in order to meet that new market, Terra Motors, a Japan-based vehicle company, is introducing a new electric scooter with an iPhone connector.

The new scooter model, called the A4000i, will allow the vehicle to transfer data to the iPhone for storage on the cloud. The applications of the connection include an electricity consumption meter, a battery meter, and various other pieces of data, such as navigation maps, to be used while driving. In other words, the iPhone will act as the dashboard for the A4000i, with all of the information needed to navigate the streets and get places without running out of power.

Terra Motors is also hoping to expand the capabilities of the iPhone connection as the A4000i rolls out. In particular, the company is hoping to add personalized advertisements to their iPhone app. Since the iPhone will collect and analyze the location information of A4000i users, it will be able to deliver personalized recommendations on local restaurants, hotels, and other nearby businesses.

In a press release for the new scooter, Terra Motors acknowledged the need for more vehicle-optimized location services in the South East Asian market.

Rather than having built-in GPS programs, the company argued that “smart phones are starting to prevail” and pointed to their new model as a leader in innovation in that department.

“Since main means of transportation is still motorcycles, there are few companies that provide service related to location information,” the press release stated. “Therefore, Terra Motors is going to provide electric scooter with smart phone connection, collecting big data in Asian market that one other ICT players have collected.”

Though it was not made clear precisely when Terra Motors intends to launch their new electric scooter model, the company did guarantee the sale of 100,000 units by the end of 2015, and expressed interest in occupying “the same positions in the electric two wheelers industry as Tesla Motors in the electric automotive industry.”

The A4000i will reportedly retail for 450,000 Japanese yen, roughly $4,500 in U.S. currency.
