Howard Hughes’ former Lake Tahoe vacation home is on the market for a cool $19.5 million, according to Curbed. The famous aviator’s stunning getaway is located close to billionaire Larry Ellison’s massive property. The next owner will have free run of the 2,518-square-foot main house, a 1,343-square-foot guest house and a separate four-car garage.
The estate, known as “Summertide,” was purchased by its current owner in 1995 for just $3.5 million.
“Amazing and historical, the old Howard Hughes Estate has over 500′ of Lake Tahoe frontage, and over 5.5 acres — a true legacy and rare offering, now called Summertide…Panoramic views are balanced by a large meadow, and natural gardens including sculptures and a landscape stream,” reads a description offered by Chase International.
Hughes was famous for his movie and aviation exploits. Business Insider reports that Hughes purchased Summertide in the 1950s to use as an escape.
“It was money that etched Howard Hughes into the public mind. His name called forth visions of untold wealth, wealth accumulated, supposedly, through Hughes’ gift for turning all he touched into gold,” reads an excerpt from “Howard Hughes: His Life and Madness.”
