Jay-Z answers fan questions on Twitter

Jay-Z takes to Twitter.

While rapper Jay-Z doesn’t post a lot on Twitter, especially compared to others in the entertainment industry, he took the Twitter world by storm Monday when he began responding to fan Tweets.

Prior to June, the 43-year-old rapper mainly used Twitter to celebrate important events.  That changed temporarily when he made a series of rant tweets last month.  Jay-Z was upset because Billboard wouldn’t count Samsung’s purchase of 1 million copies of the upcoming “Magna Carter Holy Grail” album towards record sales because of the rapper’s partnership with the company.  After complaining, he swore off Twitter until 2014.

Apparently Jay-Z’s swearing off Twitter until the New Year didn’t last long, as he has doubled his tweet count in one day.  Before the Q&A/chat Jay-Z had on Twitter, he only had around 100 tweets–he now has more than 200.  The Q&A session wasn’t announced in advance, so it was quite a shock for many fans when Jay-Z began responding to random tweets.  Some of Jay-Z’s responses were to run of the mill questions such as what his favorite movie is and how he defines success, while other tweets answered questions about his new album, “Magna Carter Holy Grail,” which was released July 4.

The live chat started when Jay-Z responded to a snarky tweet: “Why do I care that you wear Tom Ford. I wear Hanes pocket T-shirts…should I write a song about it?”  Jay-Z responded with, “YES. *my laugh.”  After that, the rapper posted a new tweet every few minutes or so.  Most of his responses were funny one-liners and didn’t reveal a lot, but thousands of people tagged in him questions and comments. While most of his responses were to unknowns, he did have one exchange with “Parks and Recreation” star and comedian Aziz Ansari. “Was it true the original title of Tom Ford was Izod?” Ansari asked. “Yes, but you knew that,” Jay-Z replied.

Some of the hashtags Jay-Z used, which will no doubt become more popular on Twitter now, include “#factsonly,” “#mylaugh” (his version of “LOL”) and “#newrules.” Since a lot of Jay-Z’s tweets were all over the place, one user asked the rapper exactly why he was holding the chat session.  Jay-Z’s answer: “great question..I don’t have a great response #factsonly.”

Whether Jay-Z was using the social media network as a means to promote his album, show his fans a little love for their support or just because he had nothing better to do, he certainly made his fans’ Monday more interesting.
