A 41-year-old Ohio man ripped off part of his own penis early Tuesday while he was high on drugs, the Detroit Free Press reports. Police found the man near a Ypsilanti Michigan middle school around 1 am. He was discovered on his knees, hands between his legs, screaming.
“There was a significant amount of blood at his waist, legs and groin area,” Geoff Fox, a sergeant with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office told The Columbus Dispatch. Fox said it took six officers to subdue the man and get him into the ambulance.
The man was taken to the hospital along with some of his body parts, which he had tried to claw off. Police say the man was close to death. “In terms of vital signs, they were as low as they could go without being dead—I could only assume due to the blood loss and the shock and trauma to the body,” Fox said.
The police discovered the man after responding to a burglar alarm at the school. Police say the man broke a window but did not take anything from the school.
The man later told investigators that he had taken hallucinatory mushrooms while visiting friends who lived near the school. He did not have a history of drug use or mental illness, according to police.
According to Columbia University’s Health Promotion Program, the main ingredient in “magic” mushrooms is psilocybin. Shrooms, as they are sometimes called, can cause a variety of symptoms and sensations. In small doses, it may cause a feeling of relaxation and or a distortion of light, color and images. In larger doses, lightheadedness may occur along with numbness around the mouth; shivering or sweating; nausea and anxiety.
Mushrooms are ingested orally, but have a bitter flavor so are often added to other foods or made into a tea, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. According to the Brown University Health Center, the hallucinogenic effects can begin within thirty minutes of ingesting the mushrooms and can last for more than four hours.
“I don’t even know what to say — it sounds painful,” neighbor Brandon Simmons told the Detroit Free Press. “Is he still alive? My prayers go out to him, and I hope he’s going to make it.”
The name and the condition of the man have not been released. He is recovering in a local hospital.
