Is Bieber the next Vanilla Ice?
Kid Rock believes Justin Bieber will fall into the same fate as Vanilla Ice, who basically disappeared from the music scene after his hit song “Ice Ice Baby” back in 1990.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the five-time Grammy nominee appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show Wednesday to promote his $20 Best Night Ever tour and wasn’t shy about revealing his thoughts on the 19-year-old Canadian heartthrob.
“Tell me if this is wrong. Justin Bieber … is 100 percent like watching Vanilla Ice all over again. It’s exactly the same,” Rock told Stern. “Well, as soon as Bieber has a hit, he’ll be like Vanilla Ice.”
Bieber has making news a lot lately from being accused of reckless driving to being kicked out of nightclubs due to his young age. This past Monday night he was even allegedly involved in a hit-and-run. While reports claim that Bieber hit a photographer with his Ferrari while leaving a comedy show in Los Angeles and then just drove away, law enforcement officials told E! Online that they are investigating the incident as a traffic collision.
Despite these blunders with the law, Rock nonetheless expressed sympathy for the singer telling Stern, “The kid’s young. He’s got some money. He’s got the world in his hands. It’s just kind of sad to see him go down this trajectory. It’s gonna be a very long ride down. We all know the story. I kind of feel for the kid, to be honest with you.”
While Rock’s opinion on Bieber becoming the new Vanilla Ice may be considered a diss to the one-hit-wonder singer, Ice himself reportedly expressed the same sentiment about Bieber two years ago.
As reported by Access Hollywood, Ice told The Huffington Post Canada in 2011 that he thinks Bieber’s success will be short-lived.
He said, “I mean, I did ‘Ice Ice Baby’ when I was 16. So I can kind of relate a bit. Sold over a hundred million records. And I had a weekend that lasted about three years, and I didn’t know who I was, what’s my purpose in life.”
“My prediction about Bieber is that he’s going to go through one of those weekends that lasts a few years because he’s had such success as a child act. Then something else new will come along and he’ll be forgotten and he can try to put all the pieces back together, so it’s going to be entertaining to watch.”
The day after that interview was published, Ice denied he ever said those things and explained that he was friends with Bieber, calling him talented and saying that he “will be around for a long time.” Despite Ice’s denial, the Huffington Post Canada told its viewers the quote is true and that they have the audio to prove it.
