Paula Deen blames her Southern upbringing for her racist comments.
Celebrity chef and restaurateur Paul Deen has cooked up a story and not everyone is buying it. Even though Deen admitted to using the N-word and making other racist comments in the past, she maintains that she is not a racist.
Deen owned up to the accusations when she was testifying during a deposition. Deen and her brother Bubba Piers are being sued by a former manager of Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House, Lisa Jackson, who claimed to be sexually harassed and said that she was targeted with racial slurs. When Deen was asked during the deposition if she had ever used any racial slurs, she said, “Yes, of course–It’s been a long time.”
In an attempt to make a bad situation better (and failing), Deen went on to say that the N-word was probably used in the context of a joke. When asked if she found such jokes “mean,” Deen responded with, “It’s just what they are–they’re jokes…most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folk…I can’t determine what offends another person.”
According to the plaintiff, it hasn’t been that long at all since Deen made such comments. Jackson claimed that when she was hired to cater a wedding for Deen’s brother in 2007, Deen wanted her to have black servers act as slaves during a plantation style wedding. Jackson said Deen wanted the servers to wear “long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around. Now, that would be a true Southern wedding, wouldn’t it? But we can’t do that because the media would be on me about that,” Deen allegedly said.
The chef, who has published numerous cookbooks, has her own line of kitchenware and a magazine, blames her Southern upbringing for her racist comments. In a statement released by Deen’s lawyer, “She was born 60 years ago, when America’s South had schools that were segregated…This is not today. To be clear Ms. Deen does not find acceptable the use of this term under any circumstance by anyone nor condone any form of racism or discrimination.”
A lot of folks aren’t buying this and Deen is facing a lot of backlash on Twitter from users who are calling her out on her comments. Not only is she accused of alienating her fan base, Twitter users are coming up with names for new recipes for Deen such as “Butter-Baked Bigotry” and “We Shall Over-Crumb Cake.”
