Lawrence, Grammer get a new sitcom.
It has been a while since Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence have starred in a successful sitcom, but now that the two are teaming up, perhaps the two funny guys will have the right chemistry and star appeal to launch a successful show.
The new sitcom, which doesn’t officially have a title yet but is rumored to be called “The Odd Couple,” features Grammer and Lawrence as two lawyers. According to the FX, the premise of the show is about lawyers who are from “vastly different backgrounds who unexpectedly meet in court on the worst day of their lives. Brought together by fate and greed, they develop a partnership and friendship, forcing each other to find the balance between the ethical and the unscrupulous in both their professional and personal lives.”
Bob Boyett and Robert Horn are executive producers of the show. They have worked together in the past on successful sitcoms such as “Designing Women,” “Full House” and “Family Matters.”
Both Lawrence and Grammer are very excited about the upcoming show and had a lot of positive things to say about each other and the producers during an interview. “I am excited to be returning to TV and to be working with Kelsey,” Lawrence said. “We have a great time together,” he added. Grammer referred to Lawrence as “one of the funniest men alive” and said, “I don’t think a better bunch of talent exists; I am honored and blessed.”
FX picked up the sitcom and has agreed to a 10-90 model for the show, which is expected to debut sometime in 2014. Under the 10-90 model, FX agrees to air the first 10 episodes of the show and if it has good ratings, they will agree to pick up the show for another 90 episodes. FX has a similar deal with Charlie Sheen’s “Anger Management” and George Lopez’s upcoming show “Saint George.” Even if the show’s ratings drop later, FX will still be obligated to finish out the 90-episode contract.
Grammer was starring in and producing the Starz drama “Boss” until this past November, when Starz cancelled the show. It was around this time that the collaboration between Grammer and Lawrence for the new show took off. If the show is indeed picked up for an extra 90 episodes, Grammer will probably be happy to be done with “Boss” since filming for 10-90 shows can be demanding. Most shows only shoot one episode per week, but shows on the 10-90 model have to film two episodes per week.
