Garlin is arrested.
This weekend another celebrity made headlines after being arrested for behaving badly, and it wasn’t Lindsay Lohan or Amanda Bynes. Jeff Garlin, who played Larry David’s friend and manager on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” was arrested on Saturday for felony vandalism. Garlin spent the night in jail and was reportedly released on a $20,000 bail on Sunday morning.
Per the initial report, a dispute Garlin had with another motorist over a parking space is what led to the alleged vandalism. TMZ first broke the news of Garlin’s arrest on Saturday. According to law enforcement sources in Los Angeles County, Garlin got into a very heated argument over a parking space in Studio City, which escalated quickly and led to Garlin allegedly busting out the windows in the other person’s Mercedes. Someone called the cops, although it isn’t clear yet whether it was the victim or a witness, as the story is still developing.
Garlin’s publicists and other representatives haven’t been available for comments on the arrest, but if Garlin is found guilty of felony vandalism he faces hefty fines and possible jail time. While it’s unlikely that Garlin will get any jail time, especially if this is his first offense (no prior arrests have been uncovered), people found guilty of felony vandalism in California face up to three years in the California State Prison or up to one year in county jail if the charge is dropped to a misdemeanor. As far as fines go, Garlin could face up to $10,000 if the damages were less than $10,000 or up to $50,000 if the damages were greater than $10,000. Since early reports suggest that he only damaged the windows and don’t mention any damage done to the body of the car, Garlin shouldn’t be facing the more severe penalties.
On “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Larry David plays a fictionalized version of himself and many of the other actors on the show also play fictionalized versions of themselves, some more extreme than others. Garlin has described his character Jeff Greene as a “pretty evil guy” who has “no morals, no scruples” and says that he doesn’t relate to the character at all, but if the charges are true, perhaps Garlin’s has more in common with his character than he believed.
In addition to “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Garlin has appeared in “Arrested Development” and has loaned his voice to a number of animated movies, including “Toy Story 3,” “ParaNorman” and “WALL-E.”
