Will Mulligan play Clinton?
“The Great Gatsby” actress Carey Mulligan is certainly seeing her career take off. After landing the lead female role in the film based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, the 28-year-old British actress is now being eyed to play Hillary Clinton.
The upcoming biopic, called “Rodham,” will focus on Clinton’s early career as a young lawyer during the Watergate scandal and will also touch on her relationship with her future husband Bill Clinton. Mulligan is on director James Ponsoldt’s short list of actresses he wants for the role; other actresses he is considering includes Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Scarlett Johansson.
No decision has been made yet on who will claim the leading role, but sources close to the situation believe that Carey Mulligan is the front-runner. While being selected to play the part of Daisy Buchanan has been the highlight of Mulligan’s acting career, landing the role of the former Secretary of the State would certainly catapult Mulligan to the A-list and make her one of the most sought after young actresses around. It is rumored that Mulligan will be sitting down with Ponsoldt to discuss the project very soon.
Other sources told The Wrap that while Mulligan is one of the top two choices to play Clinton, if Jennifer Lawrence expresses interest in the part, it will definitely go to her. That is certainly understandable considering Lawrence just recently won an Oscar for “Silver Linings Playbook” and is one of the most popular young actresses around for her role as Katniss Everdeen in the “The Hunger Games” films.
Since “Rodham” is only in the earliest stages of production, there isn’t a firm release date yet, but it is rumored that it will be released to coincide with the 2016 presidential election. Clinton did recently retire from the Obama Administration and hasn’t confirmed that she will make another run at presidency, but many experts believe she will be in the mix and early polls show that she is the favorite over Vice President Joe Biden, who is also expected to run. Some believe that the “Rodham” biopic would hurt Clinton’s chances at winning since parts of it don’t depict her in the most positive light.
The script for “Rodham,” written by Young-Il Kim, made the 2012 Black List, which is a list of the most desirable screenplays that haven’t been produced. The script is said to only cover several months of Hillary’s life, so Clinton fans who were hoping to see a depiction of what her role was during her husband’s presidency and scandal may be a little disappointed.
