Beiber in space? It could happen, according to the pop star.
Now that Canadian singer Justin Bieber has made his way around the world during his “Believer” tour, he plans to extend his musical footprint a little further–to outer space.
The 19-year-old hasn’t made it a secret that he would love to travel to space in the past. In February Bieber announced on Twitter that, “I wanna do a concert in space.” NASA responded to the tweet and said, “Maybe we can help you with that.”
While Bieber wouldn’t have quite the audience he is accustomed to, it appears that a music video shot there is in the making, but it won’t happen with NASA (or at the expense of the taxpayers). Bieber signed up with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic space mission where each seat costs $250,000, which is probably a little more than the pop star is accustomed to paying for first class flights. Bieber has purchased two seats on the flight, but a half million dollars isn’t much more than pocket change to Bieber, who is worth more than $100 million.
Bieber announced his music video plans via Twitter on Wednesday where he said, “Let’s shoot a music video in SPACE!! #nextLEVEL” Yes, shooting a music video 62 miles from Earth would definitely be taking things to the next level, but Bieber won’t quite be the first person to do so. According to Universe Today, ISS Commander Chris Hadfield gets the “first music video in space” designation after recording videos of playing the guitar and singing in space.
Folks who aren’t exactly fans of Bieber shouldn’t get their hopes up too much at the news of the singer blasting off into space–the flight won’t last very long. Despite the high price for a ticket on the rocket, passengers will only be taken to the boundary of space and back. The duration of the flight will last for approximately 2.5 hours, but it still sure to be the ride of a lifetime. The time actually spent in space is estimated to be only a few minutes, so Bieber will have to work fast if he wants to record a music video with such a limited time-frame. Otherwise, the music video could get relatively expensive if he has to break up the shoot into multiple flights.
Bieber’s space video could happen as early as this year if test flights on the Virgin Galactic continue to go well. There are around 600 people who have already paid for the trip, including other celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashton Kutcher.
