Samsung will make its S4 available in a mini version.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 may have smashed records to become the fastest-selling Android phone on the market and grabbed headlines touting its processing power and gorgeous full-screen display, but the complaint that the phone is just too big for its own good–or for an average-sized pocket, for that matter–has remained a steady one.
Cue the S4 Mini, a smaller version of the company’s flagship smartphone with a similar look to that of its big brother and most of the same capabilities. There’s a trade-off in power, of course, but as Samsung CEO JK Shin noted in a statement on Thursday, the new version can also be operated “with one hand.”
The Mini will feature a front-facing 1.9 megapixel camera and an 8 megapixel rear camera–both downgrades from the larger S4’s photo and video-grabbing devices, which boast 2.0 and 13.0 megapixel capability, respectively.
Similarly, users will see a cutback on physical storage and external memory between the two Galaxy devices. Where the full-sized Galaxy S4 exists in 16, 32, and 64 gigabyte models, the S4 Mini settles for 8 gigs of internal memory with an option for 64 more through a micro SD slot.
But the biggest difference between the two models–and likely the biggest selling point for the new device–comes in the size department. The Galaxy S4 boasts a massive 5-inch, Super AMOLED touch screen and weighs a substantial 130 grams (in comparison, the iPhone 5 weighs 112 grams). Meanwhile, the new S4 Mini restricts its screen size to a 4.3-inch display and reduces the weight to a light 107 grams.
However, while the full-sized S4 is set to expand its color options, the Mini will only come in a pair of hues: White Frost and Black Mist.
No release date for the new Samsung device has yet been established, and it is unclear thus far whether or not the phone will be as readily available as its larger counterpart. According to eweek.com, the Galaxy S4 is currently about as ubiquitous as cellphones come, appearing on seven different mobile carriers and available through numerous major retailers.
Many also forget that a miniaturized version of of the Galaxy S III did exist (it appeared on the market last October), but has only received sparse publicity and dissemination in the United States. A quick web search reveals that the S III Mini is only available on Amazon.com, suggesting that the smaller version of the phone either never carved out a niche in the market, or simply released at a time when most Samsung users were satisfied waiting for the improved S4.
