Lopez discusses her personal life.
Jennifer Lopez is taking a cue from her own family as she executive produces the upcoming drama “The Fosters” about a family of biological, adopted and foster children being raised by two mothers– otherwise known as a non-traditional family.
US Magazine reports that the 43-year-old singer also categorizes her own family with that term. Lopez has 5-year-old twins with former husband Marc Anthony, while he has one child with an ex-girlfriend and two children with an ex-wife.
“I am a non-traditional family,” the actress said in a recent interview with ABC News. “Me being a single mom, their dad doesn’t live at home with them. They have three stepbrothers from two other moms . . . that’s not traditional.”
Lopez decided to get involved with “The Fosters,” which premieres at on ABC Family Monday, June 3 at 8 p.m., to show her own children and others throughout the country that there isn’t one image of what family is supposed to look like. She explained that the only thing that matters is making sure that the children are in a loving home.
She said, “It’s about love and that’s what I constantly remind myself of because I kind of let society get inside my head, ‘Oh, it shouldn’t be like this. I did this, I did that. I failed.’ And it’s like, no. They’re happy, they’re healthy, they’re loved more than anything in the world and they’re going to be fine. I want them to know that.”
“The Fosters” features Teri Polo and Sherri Saum as the two moms caring to one biological child, an adopted set of twins and a foster teenager, a premise quite different from the family-geared shows back in the day.
“Definitely the shows I grew up with were not like this,” Lopez told ABC News. “This really has base themes that are important, which is family equals love, a place where you are accepted, completely, loved unconditionally, protected.”
While Lopez will be remaining behind the scenes of “The Fosters”, she is up in the air about whether or not she will ever make an appearance on the show. She said, “I feel the show stands on its own. Of course, I’ll do whatever I can to make sure people know it’s out there and they watch it, but is a cameo the perfect way to do that? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. Whatever happens, I’m up for.”
She may not even have time for that considering the fact that she has young children to care for and is finishing up a new album. And let’s not forget that boyfriend of hers Casper Smart, whom she has dated since October 2011. While the couple are in a committed relationship, don’t expect to see her walking down the aisle just yet. When asked if she was getting married, she told ABC News “not anytime soon.”
