Fast & Furious has proven its action film franchise can still attract large crowds after more than a decade, with its latest installment topping the box office this Memorial Day weekend.

Reuters reports that Fast & Furious 6 achieved $120 million in domestic sales from Friday to Monday, making it the biggest film opening in Universal Pictures history. The previous title holder, Fast Five, obtained $83.6 million domestically during it 2011 initial appearance in theaters. Fast & Furious 6” is also credited with having the second-biggest film opening of the year, with the biggest being Disney’s Iron Man 3 at $175.3 million.

Coming in second place at the holiday box office at $51.2 million was the Warner Bros. comedy The Hangover Part III, starring Bradley Copper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms. Paramount Pictures’ sci-fi flick Star Trek Into Darkness took third place with $47 million, followed by 20th Century Fox’s Epic with $42.6 million and Iron Man 3 with $24.4 million.

Fast & Furious 6, starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, may have reigned the supreme ruler of the theaters this weekend, but the other movies currently in theaters also have something to be proud about–helping to make this Memorial Day weekend the greatest ones yet, in terms of sales.

“We’re looking at about $316 million combined, Friday through Monday,” Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division at Hollywood.com, told NJ.com. “That’s historic — Hollywood’s biggest Memorial Day weekend ever, by far.”

According to Dergarabedian, the success of this weekend has helped turn the tide on movie attendance and sales. Prior to this weekend, both were down 11 to 12 percent compared to last year, and now the figure has decreased to 7 percent.

Despite the fact that Fast & Furious 6 just opened in theaters, there are already talks about a seventh movie. According to various reports, Fast & Furious 7 is expected to begin production this summer with its movie release date of July 11, 2014. Recently, during the premiere of Fast & Furious 6 in Southern California, one of the film franchise’s stars hinted at what fans can expect for the next film. Diesel told the crowd, “For Fast & Furious 7 we are bringing it back to Los Angeles!” The city was the location for the film’s first installment. In addition to the location of the film being revealed, it has been announced that James Wan will be replacing Justin Lin as director. Lin has directed every movie in the series since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Wan is best known for directing the horror films Saw and Insidious.
