Cera discusses the return of Arrested Development.
The return of the Bluth family to television this weekend may seem surreal to fans of “Arrested Development,” but its even more so for one of its stars Michael Cera.
The Toronto Star reports that the 24-year-old actor, who portrays the character of George-Michael, couldn’t believe it when it was announced that the Emmy-winning comedy series would return for a fourth season on Netflix after it was canceled by FOX in 2006 due to low ratings, despite praise from critics and fans.
“For the longest time it was so hypothetical,” he told the newspaper. “I was really skeptical all the way up to when we were on the set. It was surreal.”
In addition to reprising his original role on the sitcom, Cera also joined show creator Mitch Hurwitz in writing the new 15 episodes. Unlike past seasons, episodes will focus on a single character, with the other cast members appearing randomly.
“Stories intersect and overlap,” Cera told the Toronto Sun. “Every character is on their own track and the master story is kind of the tapestry of it all. There are things that link everyone together, but everyone is kind of on their own trajectory.”
Besides Cera, cast members of the beloved series include Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Jeffrey Tambor, Alia Shawkat and Jessica Walter. Liza Minnelli will also be returning to her role as Lucille Austero, the neighbor and social rival of Lucille Bluth.
Cera explained that he enjoyed writing lines for Minnelli, saying “I don’t know why, but for some reason I could really give her good jokes. I would pitch the jokes in her voice.”
On Sunday, May 26, Netflix will release the entire fourth season at one time, which Cera thinks will perfectly suit the show’s format. He notes that after the series was cancelled and its seasons were released on DVD, fans were able to view the episodes as fast as they wanted to and could go back to episodes to pick up on missed jokes.
“It happened to be good for that kind of viewing,” he said. “There’s such a high frequency of jokes and so much dialogue.”
Speaking of the approach of releasing all the episodes together, Cera said, “Like an album, is the comparison Mitch (Hurwitz) makes. Here’s this whole body of work, and you can take your time with it or watch it all at once.”
