Canseco is facing allegations of rape.
Adding yet another legal issue to his list of troubles, former MLB player Jose Canseco is being investigated for sexual assault. He is accused of raping a Las Vegas model, something he denies ever happening.
Canseco hasn’t been officially charged yet, but is being investigated, something he made known on his Twitter account. Canseco made a series of Tweets, some of which he later deleted, that addressed the rape allegations. Some of the Tweets identified the victim by name and included other personal information, such as her phone number and address.
The alleged incident took place on May 10. The first post about the investigation came on Wednesday, when Canseco said the following: “Breaking news this is a first folks las vegas police was just at my house i have been charged with rape.”
Shedding a little light on exactly what the accuser said happened in one of his Tweets, Canseco said, “[The accuser] told police that I druged [sic] her and then raped her. hmmmmm. lets find out what really happened.” Subsequent Tweets accused the model of lying and he also requested that she and him both take a polygraph test on national television.
While the old quote “thou doth protest too much” comes to mind when looking over Canseco’s Tweets, if the allegations turn out to be false, it’s hard to blame him for wanting to clear his name. However, the fact that he listed so much of the accuser’s personal information online was certainly an error in judgment and won’t bode well for him should the matter make it to court. In his most recent Tweet, Canseco posted a picture of the accuser, again including her name.
Canseco’s ex-girlfriend Leila Knight spoke to TMZ regarding the allegations and she says that there is no doubt the victim is lying. “I’ve been talking to him all day … it’s obvious that it’s a publicity stunt, I mean — the girl’s an aspiring actress,” Knight said. Knight also said that Canseco always tells the truth and described him as a “gentle” person.
The former slugger’s past legal issues certainly don’t depict him as a gentle person–if anything, just the opposite. In 1992, he was charged with assault for ramming his ex-wife’s car. Five years later, he was arrested for hitting his current wife. In 2001, he was arrested for aggravated battery after beating up a man to the point that the man needed 20 stitches and suffered a broken nose. Canseco has kept his nose clean since then as far as violent acts are concerned and hasn’t been to court for anything major since late 2008.
