The younger Smith follows in his father's footsteps.
Even though rumors have made rounds that Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, wants to be emancipated from his parents, the father-son relationship is still going strong.
Jaden and his dad are currently promoting their new movie After Earth and appeared together for an interview with E! News. The 14-year-old actor (who is also pursuing a rap career–the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, apparently) opened up during the interview and shared some of the advice his dear old dad has offered. “Probably the best advice he’s ever given me is, ‘Don’t have a girlfriend,'” Jaden said. “The stress is real.”
So far Jaden is following his dad’s advice and is staying away from the dating scene. Of course at 14, he’s a little young to really get into anything serious, even by today’s standards, considering he is too young to even qualify for a driver’s permit, let alone get behind the wheel of a car by himself to take out a girl.
Will cracked up when Jaden revealed the advice and said that he doesn’t want his son dating “for now.” Instead, he wants Jaden focusing on figuring out who he is and what he wants to do with his life. “At this point, I just want him to establish his dreams, establish his desires,” Will said. “And blending with another person is very difficult…so my encouragement to him is to be honest with anybody that he interacts with. Don’t make commitments that a 14-year-old can’t live up to.”
Will also spoke about the emancipation rumors earlier this week. The rumor started when Will make a joke in Tokyo about Jaden being emancipated, but that took off and before long, people were speculating on what went down between Jaden and his parents to make him want to move out on his own. Will assured everyone that the emancipation isn’t being considered and won’t happen until Jaden becomes a bigger star than his dad. “If he had a movie that’s bigger than my movies, then he can go ahead,” Will joked.
In After Earth, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Will and Jaden star as a father-son pair who crash land on Earth 1,000 years after humans left the planet. The movie opens in theaters on May 31. This isn’t the first time dad and son have appeared on the big screen together. Will and Jaden starred in the movie Pursuit of Happyness in 2007, which earned Jaden an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance.
