Zeta-Jones returns home after Bipolar treatment.

After spending the past couple of weeks in a treatment facility for help with her mental condition Bipolar II Disorder, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has returned home.  Zeta-Jones checked herself into the mental health facility at the end of April and was supposed to spend 30 days there, but left ahead of schedule.  She was spotted in New York on Tuesday.

Bipolar II is a mood disorder characterized by episodes of depression and mania.  While there is no cure for the disorder, individuals who have it can manage it by taking medications and undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy.  Occasionally, a Bipolar II patient will need to have their medications adjusted, something Zeta-Jones’s husband Michael Douglas said was corrected during her stay. “She’s got herself worked out with her meds and she’s raring to go!” Douglas said during an interview on Extra.

News of Zeta-Jones being diagnosed with Bipolar II came out in 2011, when she checked herself into a mental facility in Connecticut.  The actress was open about the disorder at the time and said, “This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them.  If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it.”

After Zeta-Jones checked into the facility on April 29, her representative Cece Yorke released the following statement: “Previously Catherine has said that she is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner.”  Douglas briefly talked about her treatment and didn’t indicate that anything major led to her checking into the facility.  Douglas referred to the stay at the facility as a “10,000-mile check-up.”  A source close to Zeta-Jones also said “there was no big problem” that prompted the visit and that this has always been part of her plan to manage her mental healthcare.

The 43-year-old mom to two has been very busy lately with movie projects, so it’s no wonder she needed to take a break to reevaluate her condition.  Zeta-Jones had roles in three films in 2012, a number she hadn’t matched since having her first child in 2000.  She also has parts in three 2013 films, including the action film “Red 2,” which comes out in July.  Zeta-Jones stars alongside Bruce Willis and Anthony Hopkins in the flick.  Now that Zeta-Jones is out of treatment, she will help Douglas promote his new film “Behind the Candelabra.”  Douglas stars as Liberace in the film, which tells the story of Liberace and his younger lover (played by Matt Damon).  The movie opens May 26.
