Agent smartwatch surpasses $100k Kickstarter goal in just one day

The Agent sports seven days of battery life when used in typical fashion, but stretches to 30 days in watchface-only mode.

The Agent smartwatch is already no secret on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, surpassing its $100,000 goal in just one day.

The NY-based custom electronics outfit Secret Labs and watchmakers the House of Horology product, the Agent, has the same “memory LCD” backlit black and white display as the similar Sharp-made Pebble.

However, the Agent’s display is square, and measures in at 1.28 inches with 128 x 128 pixel resolution, while the Sharp is 1.26 inches rectangular with a 144 x 168 pixel display.

The Agent sports seven days of battery life when used in typical fashion, but stretches to 30 days in watchface-only mode. Even the battery is user-friendly with the Agent, as it’s rechargeable and user-replaceable.

The Agent and the Pebble both have an ambient light sensor, 3-axis accelerometer, vibrating motor and are smartphone connectable via Bluetooth.

Its creators call Agent “the world’s smartest watch” due to a pair of processors that serve different functions.  A 120 MHz ARM Cortex-M4 processor takes care of the bulk of the phone’s actions, while a secondary AVR co-processor serves as more of a dustbin for lighter, less-involved tasks.

While both watches now have a water-resistant design, with specs to still be determined, the Agent can utilize a Qi charging pad to be recharged wirelessly while the Pebble requires USB.

The Pebble is also only compatible to IOS and Android devices, while the Agent reportedly includes Windows Phone 8 with the hopes of developing more apps to give it additional bells and whistles.

With their funding goal exceeded, Agent creators will be able to quickly get their product into the production phase. However, the initial offering price of $129 is no longer available. It will now cost $149 to secure the Agent, with deliveries set to roll out in December.

“We are excited to launch the most energy-efficient and easy-to-program smart watch,” said Chris Walker, founder of Secret Labs via a company press release. “With Atmel’s microcontrollers, we are delivering an extremely low-power watch with rich capabilities. And for application developers, we offer a free software development kit, making it easy to develop watch apps that enrich users’ lives.”

Company officials say there are pleased with how user-friendly the Agent is, including its anti-glare glass lens and accent-stitched 22m wrist strap. It can also display smart phone notifications and work with third-party apps.
