‘Mike & Molly’ season finale postponed following tragic Oklahoma tornado

Did CBS make the right call?

As tornadoes continue to wreck havoc on states throughout the nation, CBS has decided to postpone the season finale of “Mike & Molly” which involves a similar storyline.

The Huffington Post reports that the “Windy City” episode was originally slated for tonight and features the characters of Mike and Molly confessing important news to one another as a tornado descends on the city of Chicago.

Despite the fact that the episode wasn’t going to show any actual destruction, the network pulled the episode in wake of the massive, mile-wide tornado that ripped throughout Oklahoma City on Monday. The twister, with winds up to 200 mph, destroyed countless homes and buildings in Oklahoma City, including an elementary school, high school and hospital, according to CBS News. Although there isn’t an official count on the number of casualties in Oklahoma, Mary Fallin, the governor of Oklahoma told the broadcast station that “it would be a miracle if people didn’t get harmed.” According to CNN, at least 37 people were killed as a result of the horrific storm, including seven elementary school students.

“Due to the tragic events this afternoon in Oklahoma, we are pre-empting tonight’s season finale of ‘Mike & Molly,’ which has a related storyline,” a CBS spokesperson said in a statement. “A repeat broadcast of ‘Mike & Molly’ will run in the time period. The season finale will be broadcast at an appropriate date.”

While there isn’t a set date for when the third season finale of “Mike & Molly” will air, CBS has renewed the sitcom for a fourth season set to air sometime midseason. The series, which stars Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell in the lead roles, will have to continue to bring laughs without its creator Mark Roberts. “Mike & Molly” producer Warner Bros. TV told Deadline in a statement, that Roberts “will be stepping down from his showrunner and executive producer roles after three successful seasons to focus on other projects.” Co-executive producer Al Higgins will take Roberts place for the upcoming season. This past season, “Mike and Molly” has been struggling with ratings, as its viewership has declined from 10.1 million viewers last season to 8.3 million currently. Time will tell if Higgins will be able to turn this around.
