‘Star Wars’ animated series set for 2014 debut

Disney plans a new animated Star Wars series.

If you were a fan “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” get ready to rejoice. No, unfortunately the long-running animated program isn’t returning, but rather a new animated series from its former director will be making its way to Disney XD next fall.

Deadline reports that the series, titled “Star Wars Rebels”, will take place during Episode III and IV of the Star Wars films and will revolve around a time when “the Empire is fortifying its hold on the galaxy and hunting down the last of Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion is taking shape.”

Dave Filoni, who was a supervising director for “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” will serve as an executive producer for the show, in addition to Greg Weisman, supervising producer of “The Spectacular Spider-Man,” and Simon Kinberg, producer of “X-Men: First Class” and screenwriter of “Sherlock Holmes.”

There is no word on additional plot details, what characters will be included or what actors have signed onto the production. The only thing that is certain is the fact that the animated show will air its one-hour premiere on the Disney Channel in 2014 as a special telecast before it moves to its permanent home on Disney XD. The public’s first glimpse at the new show will be at the Star Wars Celebration Europe this summer in Germany.

News of the upcoming original series comes nearly six months after Disney acquired Lucasfilm. “Star Wars Rebels” will bring hope to fans who have been waiting for a show to replace “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” After its cancellation in March, new animated series such as “Star Wars: Detours” from the creators of “Robot Chicken” and “Star Wars: Reclamation” were in the works but have since been put on hold.

Of course fans of the animated series are surely also getting excited about the J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: Episode VII” expected to hit theaters in 2015. While it is unknown if Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie will be reprising their popular roles, the Huffington Post reports that “The Tudors” star Jonathan Rhys Meyers may also be joining either the light or dark side of the force in the upcoming sequel.
