A new Macbook Air is just around the corner, according to reports.
Resale stock for the current incarnation of the MacBook Air, Apple’s thinnest, sleekest laptop model, has largely vanished from the web this week, suggesting that the corporation may be preparing to announce a new and improved version.
In an article posted Friday afternoon, AppleInsider noted that the supply for the popular 13-inch MacBook Air, which boasts a 1.8 GHz processor and a 256 GB solid-slate hard drive, has suddenly vanished from authorized resellers such as Amazon, MacConnection, B&H, and MacMall. Best Buy was the only retailer still holding inventory for the device.
Traditionally with Apple products, a sudden thinning of supply and availability has been a sign that the company was ready to unveil their next model. Last February, Apple TVs began disappearing from store shelves, preempting the April introduction of an overhauled version, and many market specialists are predicting a similar switchover for the MacBook Air.
If a new version of the Air–or any other Apple product, such as a new take on the iPhone 5–is on the way, chances are it will be revealed at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is scheduled for June 10 – 14.
The current model of the MacBook Air has been on the market since last June, but the slim notebook computer line has yet to take advantage of the MacBook Pro’s state-of-the-art Retina display technology. A new model of the Air would likely add that high-resolution capability, as well as a new, more highly-powered processor chip courtesy of Intel.
Intel is set to debut their latest processor–the Haswell chip–during the first week of June. The new processor will allow for superior graphics over past models, as well as more energy-efficient operation, which should help Apple boost the already outstanding battery life on their notebook computers.
While the MacBook Air seems like it will be the first Apple computer to take advantage of this new technology, given the sudden drought of supply and the close proximity between Intel’s chip unveiling and the WWDC event, the company could be looking to introduce a Haswell-powered MacBook Pro as well. If that’s the case, the Air will probably still hit the market first, but anyone looking to purchase a Pro in the near future might want to wait for the WWDC announcements to see if a new and improved version is in the offing.
