Kirstie Alley takes on Abercrombie & Fitch CEO

Alley goes after Abercrombie.

Days after comments resurfaced that CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch Michael Jeffries made declaring that his clothes aren’t intended for overweight or unattractive people, former “Cheers” actress Kirstie Alley gave him a piece of her mind.

To give a little back story about the issue, Jeffries talked about how exclusive he wants to keep the Abercrombie & Fitch brand in an interview with Salon in 2006.  He is so particular about who wears his clothes that he wants to make sure that kids who are overweight can’t shop there and refuses to offer clothing in larger sizes.  Jeffries made the following comments that were brought up in Business Insider earlier this month: “In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids.  Candidly, we go after the cool kids…A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong.”

The Business Insider story discussed how Abercrombie & Fitch differs from its competitors by refusing to offer plus-size clothing, preferring to make the clothes available to people who are a certain size.  After the comments resurfaced people became outraged, including Alley, who among other things has been notorious for her weight fluctuations and plus-size figure.

Alley posted a series of tweets on her Twitter page slamming Jeffries and the Abercrombie & Fitch brand.  Tweets in her rant included: “Dear CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch…you are not cute and your head is HUGE. You need to stop wearing A&F clothing…just not attractive enough” and “I’ve got two kids in that [target] bracket, but they will never walk in those doors.”

While some might say that Alley shouldn’t have retaliated to Jeffries by resorting to personal insults, many see it as her fighting fire with fire.  After all, he is essentially telling teenagers who already have enough self-esteem issues that many of them will never be good enough to shop at his store.

Alley isn’t the only person taking to Twitter to call out Jeffries.  Twitter is filled with people calling him out directly and one person even started a petition to make Jeffries change how he markets his clothing.  While many users are outright cursing out Jeffries and calling him names, quite a few are wondering how this will impact sales.

As interesting as it is to see Alley all fired up, one guy responded by giving away Abercrombie & Fitch clothes to the homeless and posted a video of it, which has received nearly 5 million views. The video is making waves on Twitter with the hashtag #FitchtheHomeless.
