Major networks reshuffle.
The internet has been swirling for the past week with news about the big television networks–CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, and to a lesser extent, the CW–and their plans for the upcoming fall season. Rumors of shows being continued, cancelled, or picked up for a test run have resonated loud and clear for days, only slightly diminishing an industry-wide feeling that network television is in big trouble. But if the once-prominent networks are fading away in the face of DVR and online streaming, the Cable channels and the more adventurous programming they have to offer has rarely been thriving more. AMC, for example, has gathered followers and massive acclaim in recent years with titles like Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad, and now, it looks like TNT and TBS are trying to follow in their footsteps.
TNT and TBS have revealed a list of big-name actors, directors, screenwriters, producers, and even authors who are currently developing pilots for the channel. According to CNN, the impressive slate includes Steven Spielberg, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Carell, Jamie Foxx, Sean Bean, Frank Darabont, Elizabeth Banks, Diablo Cody, Denis Leary, Dick Wolf, and Nicholas Sparks.
The shows themselves range from scripted dramas to game shows, comedies to talk shows. Spielberg, for one, has his name attached to a pair of adventure series: Peter Gunn, a reboot of the late ’50s/early ’60s detective drama, and Portal House, a science fiction serial drama dealing with mysterious holes in the space-time continuum.
Meanwhile, author Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook, A Walk to Remember) will try to replicate the success of his books and the movies that they inspire on the small screen. The potential show, called A Bend in the Road, would be a mystery/drama series from Sparks’ novel of the same name, and would follow a small-town sheriff as he uncovers secrets about his wife’s murder.
Other possible pick-ups could include a game show based on the beloved Parker Brothers board game Monopoly, a comedy series inspired by actor Jamie Foxx and his relationship with his 18 year-old daughter, and a talk show with screenwriter Diablo Cody, who won an Oscar for her work on the film Juno in 2007.
