Williams will return to television.

For the first time since the early 1980’s, Robin Williams will appear as a regular on a comedy television show. As if that news wasn’t good enough, he’ll be joined by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The show, called The Crazy Ones, is about life at an advertising agency. Williams plays an advertising genius at that agency named Simon Roberts. Think of his character as Dr. Gregory House meets Don Draper, but with a sense of humor.

The plot thickens because Williams’ all-too-eccentric character works with his daughter, Sydney, who is played by Gellar. In the video, Gellar describes her character as ying to her father’s yang. She will be portrayed as her father’s babysitter and/or the one who keeps him out of trouble.

According to the description for the series provided by CBS, Simon Roberts employs “unorthodox methods and unpredictable behavior” that would normally get him fired. Fortunately for Roberts and the people who will be watching the show, he’s the boss, so he’s not going anywhere.

The trailer begins with Robin Williams announcing, “I’m back!” and then laughing maniacally. The scene then switches to Robin Williams in character battling, for whatever reason, a life-size Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot. His daughter appears and, requiring his attention, delivers the knock-out, neck-stretching blow to the larger-than-usual toy.

The trailer gives us a peek into the comedic style of the show, and it already has Williams written all over it. It appears that there will be quite a bit of riffing, and there are few people in the history of comedy that are better at that than Robin Williams himself. In another scene depicting a meeting, one of the participants says, “Simon, I have something difficult to say.” Williams retorts: “Is it ‘rubber baby buggy bumpers’?  because I struggle with that one!”

This is a show where comedy will move a mile a minute. The Williams riffs will be delivered with such speed that many viewers will miss the second, third, and fourth lines because they are still laughing at the first line. This is the Williams M.O., going back to his days as a stand-up comic.

The series is produced by David E. Kelly, of L.A. Law, Ally McBeal, and The Practice fame. The Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner will be joined by Dean Lorey, John Montgomery, Bill D’Elia, and Mark Teitelbaum in producing the series. Jason Winer directed the pilot.

The Crazy Ones is set to air this fall on CBS during the 9PM time slot. The show will follow another new show called The Millers and will precede Two and a Half Men.
