Rowland talks Beyonce, domestic abuse.
Dirty laundry is usually something people try to keep from getting out in the open for fear of running their reputation, however, Kelly Rowland is letting it all air out.
The Toronto Sun reports that the 32-year-old singer shares her raw emotions with the world in her new single “Dirty Laundry” from her upcoming album Talk a Good Game. Within the track, the former Destiny’s Child member reveals her envy of Beyonce’s solo career, as well as details about a past abusive relationship.
In the song, Rowland alludes to feeling like she was living in Beyonce’s shadow after the R & B girl group called it quits back in 2006.
She sings, “When my sister was on stage killin’ it like a motherf–/I was enraged, feelin’ it like a mother f–/Bird in a cage/You would never know what I was dealin’ with/Went our separate ways but I was happy she was killin’ it/Bittersweet she was up, I was down/No lie, I feel good for her but what do I do now?/Forget the records, off the record, I was going through some bulls–/Post-Survivor, she on fire/Who wanna hear my bulls–?”
Besides being jealous of her former Destiny Child’s colleague, Rowland was also suffering physical and mental abuse at the hands of a so-called lover, with the lyrics of “Meanwhile, this n– is putting his hands on me/You don’t know the half of this industry/When you’re soaked in tears for years, it never airs out/When you make pain look this good, it never wears out.”
She also discusses how her abuser tried to make her abandon her family and friends by telling her that he was the only one who loved her.
Rowland had a hard time recording the song, as it highly emotional.
“It took me days to record,” she told Billboard. “I had to get past being so upset and actually sing the song, not sob through it.”
While Rowland might have felt she was living in the shadow of Beyonce during her post-Destiny’s Child career, her new single will surely place her in spotlight, at least for a little while. Talk a Good Game is expected to hit stores on June 18, but fans can get an early listen to “Dirty Laundry” here.
