Saldana discusses Jolie, goes nude for Allure magazine.
Zoe Saldana is making news this week.
The “Star Trek Into Darkness” star, who posed topless for this month’s Allure magazine, discussed a number of topics at the Tinseltown premiere of the film in Los Angeles Tuesday night.
Angelina Jolie’s decision to publicly announce that she recently had a preventive double mastectomy is receiving much praise from Hollywood, especially from one actress who called the Oscar-Winning beauty “the ultimate badass.”
Saldana also wished Jolie a speedy recovery and called her an inspiration to women.
Saldana told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet,” If she were here I would say thank you for being so brave. And knowing that for sharing the personal experience you’re going to empower and inspire a lot of women who are victims of cancer right now to heal and survive.”
On Monday, Jolie revealed in an op-ed piece she wrote for The New York Times that she underwent the procedure to remove both her breasts after she found out that she was at high risk for developing breast cancer. She wanted to prevent her children from having to worry about losing their mother to the disease, like she did. Her mother Marcheline Bertrand lost her battle with breast cancer in 2007, after suffering with it for nearly 10 years. Jolie explained that by going through with the surgery, she has drastically reduced her own chance of getting breast cancer “from 87 percent to under 5.”
The movie star said she wanted to reveal her decision to the world to show women that a risk of cancer doesn’t automatically constitute a death sentence and that they have the power to change what happens to them in the future.
“I hope that other women can benefit from my experience,” she writes in the NY Times article. “Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.”
Jolie also explained that while the decision to have a double mastectomy was difficult, it has empowered her knowing that she has helped to prolong the time she gets to spend with her family and having gained a sense of authority on something that can be so unpredictable. Moreover, she explained that she doesn’t “feel any less of a woman.”
In addition to Saldana weighing in on Jolie’s announcement, “Star Trek Into Darkness” director J.J. Abrams gave Jolie kudos for being open about her decision, as it has helped to establish an ongoing conversation about an uncomfortable, but nonetheless important issue.
