Bluth’s banana stand hits Yankee Stadium

The banana stand strikes again.

Lucille Bluth would never approve of this.

The Bluth’s Banana Stand, which is as much a character on cult favorite “Arrested Development” as Michael or Gob, made an unusual stop in its promotional tour: Yankee Stadium.  All afternoon into early evening on Wednesday, baseball fanatics and fans of the show were able to snag free Yankees tickets by yelling one of the show’s catchphrases, “There’s always money in the banana stand,” or by showing up to the stand dressed as their favorite character. Details about the banana stand’s whereabouts and special offers are revealed every day on the show’s official Twitter account, @ArrestedDev.

The Bluth’s Original Frozen Banana Stand tour began on May 8 in London as a way of promoting “Arrested Development’s” Season 4 premiere on May 26.  Since mid-May the stand has been hitting tourist spots in New York City, including Radio City Music Hall and Columbus Circle, and is set to appear on Good Morning America on Thursday. Surprise guests have even dropped by: director Ron Howard popped up one afternoon to sell bananas, while on another day, Michael Cera (George Michael), Tony Hale (Buster), and Jeffrey Tambor (George Bluth Sr.) posed for pictures in front of the stand. The stand is expected to appear in various U.S. cities from now until the show’s premiere.

After a seven-year hiatus, all of the main cast members, including Jason Bateman (Michael), David Cross (Tobias), and Cera, will return for 15 new episodes that will be available to stream via Netflix all at once. Several actors who had recurring roles will also make an appearance, including Liza Minnelli as Lucille Austero, Henry Winkler as the family’s bumbling attorney Barry Zuckerkorn, and Ben Stiller as Tony Wonder. The show will also welcome a number of new, yet familiar faces, including Terry Crews, John Krasinski, Kristen Wiig, Isla Fisher, and “Mad Men’s” John Slattery.

After its 2006 cancellation by Fox for low ratings, “Arrested Development” became known as the funniest show no one had watched. In 2007, Time magazine listed it as one of the “100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME.” And in 2012, Entertainment Weekly ranked the show number 2 in its “25 Best Cult TV Shows from the Past 25 Years.”

Judging by its trailer, Season 4 will not pick up where it left off, but will instead take place several years later, with George Michael and Maeby attending college, Lindsay and Tobias still attempting to sort out their confusing marriage, and Michael desperately trying to distance himself from his dysfunctional family.
