A scene straight from Ocean's 11.
In a robbery that appeared to be inspired by the Ocean’s Eleven film, a couple of thieves in South Africa made off with a lot of cash after Justin Bieber’s concert in Johannesburg.
Bieber entertained thousands at the sold-out show at FNB Stadium, which seats more than 90,000 people and was later the site of a crime. The robbers went in through the roof of the stadium and chiseled through bricks and very thick walls to dig a tunnel leading to the safe room. After finishing with the tunnel, they lowered themselves down with ropes into the safe room where they busted into the vault and made off with more than $300,000. Most of the money was from concession and merchandise sales.
After an employee discovered the debris from the crime and saw that the safe had been tampered with, she alerted police and the stadium was put on lockdown. Maybe the heist wasn’t as well-paying as a Danny Ocean scheme, but police say the theft took days of planning and was very elaborate. According to local news outlets, it is estimated that it took the robbers three days of digging and chiseling to make it to the safe room.
Police think that the robbery may have been an inside job since the robbers clearly knew the location of the safe. There aren’t any suspects yet, but the police will have hundreds of employees to interview, including the 300-plus security guards that were hired for the event. There’s a chance that some of the security guards used false papers to get hired, which is something stadium manager Jacques Grobbelaar says is a major issue. “You could have very good people, and then the last 50 of 300 or 400 guards are simply just bodies,” he said. “This is a concern that we continuously address.”
Perhaps the theft will serve as a wake-up call because the damage could have been far greater than the monetary loss. If the security wasn’t enough to prevent a couple of thieves from gaining access to the stadium, then keeping away would-be mass murderers that might target such events poses much larger problems.
On a lighter note, after hearing about the heist Bieber went to Twitter to make sure his name was clear and tweeted: “It wasn’t me.”
The show in Johannesburg was the last date on Bieber’s overseas tour, which has been marred with controversy. Bieber is now headed back to the United States and will begin the North American leg of his tour on June 22 in San Diego.
