Schwarzenegger signs on for cult classic remake.
Since leaving the California governor’s seat in January 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been busily getting back to work in Hollywood. During his political tenure (which ran from late 2003 to early 2011), Schwarzenegger only appeared in two films: 2004’s remake of Around the World in Eighty Days and 2010’s action-hero team-up, The Expendables. Now, the actor’s IMDB page lists half a dozen upcoming projects, either rumored or in the post-production stages, and today’s news–that Schwarzenegger will star in a remake of The Toxic Avenger, a forgotten, 1984 cult classic–adds another interesting turn to the list.
The original Toxic Avenger, written and directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, told the tale of a teenager who joined an environmental group to earn points with his crush, promptly fell into a vat of toxic waste, and morphed into a hulking, crime-fighting monster. Though it is unclear at this point what role Schwarzenegger will be taking in the film, Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink co-wrote the script and is on board to direct.
Additionally, Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, A Beautiful Mind, i Robot) and Richard Saperstein (Se7en, Hancock, The Punisher) will help produce the project, which will likely be shopped to distributors at the renowned Cannes Film Festival next spring. Cannes 2013 begins later this week.
The Toxic Avenger was hardly a box office smash, but it has gathered a substantial cult following in the years since its release. Today, the film’s legacy includes three lesser sequels, a stage musical, and a television cartoon. The upcoming remake, though it may seem out of left field, is just part of a recent wave of 1980s and ’90s cult classic re-imaginings. In the past year alone, new versions of Evil Dead, Red Dawn, Schwarzenegger’s own Total Recall have hit multiplex screens–to varying levels of success–and directors are evidently eager to try the same trick with lesser-known titles.
Schwarzenegger’s other upcoming projects include the action thrillers Escape Plan and Ten, set for September 2013 and January 2014 release dates, respectively. Also in 2014, Schwarzenegger is slated to star in the next Conan the Barbarian reboot, as well as the third Expendables picture. The addition of The Toxic Avenger to his schedule could make next year the busiest year of Schwarzenegger’s career; a Hollywood comeback, to be sure.
