Mike Tyson to star as cartoon detective on new Adult Swim animated series

Tyson gets a new show.

When you think of Mike Tyson four things come to mind: heavyweight boxing champion of the world, a person who bite off a piece his opponent’s ear in the boxing ring, a convicted rapist and a man with an unmistakable voice.

Well, his voice is exactly what he will use for his next venture as a cartoon character for a new 15-minute animated series on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim called “Mike Tyson Mysteries.” Long gone are the days of Tyson holding up his dukes and proving his exceptional fighting capabilities in the boxing ring. Now fans will be able to see him use his persistent and enduring attitude to fight problems in a fictitious world.

Reuters reports that the 46-year-old former boxer will play a cartoon detective solving mysteries with the help of a magical tattoo on his face and a talking pigeon. Plot storylines will include things such as trying to defeat a super computer at chess and figuring how why an author and werewolf can’t finish writing a novel.

While a specific premiere date for the series hasn’t been announced, the Cartoon Network said it will debut next year.

“Mike Tyson Mysteries” is just one of a slew of other shows that will soon be introduced into the Adult Swim lineup, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition to Tyson’s show, new original series will include “Rick and Morty,” a half-hour series revolving around the adventures of a genius inventor grandfather and grandson; “Mr. Pickles”, a 15-minute series about a dog with a satanic side; “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell,” a 15-minute live-action series about an associate demon trying to capture people’s souls on earth to advance his position in the underworld; and “Hot Package,” a fake 15-min Canadian entertainment news program similar to shows like “Entertainment Tonight.”

Adult Swim, which features animation and live-action comedy on the Cartoon Network between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., has experienced record ratings over the past year. According to data compiled by Nielsen, the network attracted more adult viewers between the ages of 18 and 49 than any other ad-supported network in 2012.

“As Adult Swim continues to grow and be the place for great comedic talent as well as surprising and unexpected content, it is important that we expand its development of original programs so that we can build on its success even more,” Stuart Snyder, president and COO of Turner’s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media Group, said in a statement, as indicated by THR. “The record ratings the network is experiencing this year is a testament to the great work being done by all the wonderfully talented people at Adult Swim.”
