Microsoft slams comparison of Windows 8 to ‘New Coke’

What do you think of Windows 8?

Microsoft isn’t happy with the comparison of Windows 8 to “New Coke.” Earlier this week, an analyst at tech research firm Envisioneering said that Windows 8 is “like New Coke, going on for seven months — only Coke listened better.

Writing for The Official Microsoft Blog, Frank X. Shaw, Corporate Vice President of Corporate Communications at Microsoft, slammed the New Coke comparison. In his post, which was called “Staying Centered,” Shaw labeled criticism of Windows 8 “extreme.” He also called the criticism sensationalist and “hyperbole.”

Shaw made a point to unravel the New Coke comparison. He said that a computer operating system, unlike a can of soda, “offers different experiences to different customers to meet different needs.” He promised users that Microsoft will continue to work toward improving Windows 8. As his final message to consumers, Shaw offered the following suggestion: “Look less to the edges and more to the center.”

PCWorld reports that Microsoft has sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses. Plus, as Shaw promised, Microsoft has been listening to consumer feedback and plans to launch the Windows Blue update later this year. Unlike New Coke, it looks like Windows 8 is here to stay.

So what exactly happened to New Coke? According to TIME, New Coke was introduced on April 23, 1985. Coke said that it was getting rid of its original soda formula for a newer, sweeter version. Three months later, after thousands of angry phone calls, letters and a lot of bad press, Coke returned to the “classic” formula and the rest was history or at least New Coke was.

What do you think of Windows 8? Is the criticism spot on or too harsh? A lot of critics have argued that Microsoft should reverse course on a product that isn’t popular with consumers? Should Microsoft reverse course on Windows 8? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
