Shakira talks motherhood at ‘The Voice’ red carpet event

Shakira discusses motherhood.

It’s the age-old dilemma: balancing work and motherhood. It’s not a simple task, but new mom Shakira is taking it in stride.

“You got to figure it out as you go,” the 36-year-old Colombian singer said in an interview during a red carpet event honoring the top 12 finalists of “The Voice.”

Shakira recently returned to her position as a coach on the singing competition just months after giving birth to her first child Milan Pique Mebarak. Shakira and boyfriend Gerard Pique welcomed Milan into the world on Jan. 22.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” hit maker has occasionally been mixing her personal and professional life together by bringing Milan onto the set of “The Voice” in an attempt to ease the balance between the two worlds. According to host Carson Daly, Shakira has a baby proofed double-wide trailer that is basically “a full blown nursery.” Milan has also made his way onto the stage of the show, as shown in a tweet by Shakira last month where she is holding Milan in her chair.

The presence of babies or kids on the set of “The Voice” is nothing out of the ordinary, as judges Daly and Usher are both fathers and Adam Levine is an uncle.

In addition to talking about her infant son, Shakira discussed how she is working to get back into shape saying, “I still have a long way to go. I still have a few pounds over to lose. I look decent.”

During NBC Universal’s press day last month, she revealed to reporters that she was doing Zumba to loss post-pregnancy weight. She also explained how she thinks it is unfair that women nowadays are scrutinized if they don’t slim down immediately after having a baby.

However, despite any challenges that come with the territory of motherhood, Shakira is in love with her newborn.

“He’s great,” she said at the red carpet event. “He’s so mellow, but he’s very alert too. it’s like he knows what’s going on around him. He knows when someone comes in the room or comes out. He’s something.”

Shakira will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day this weekend. She joins a list of countless other celebrities, including Giuliana Rancic, Holly Madison, Kristen Bell, Adele and Snooki.
