Did Bieber get arrested?
The Twitter account for E! News was hacked on Saturday and the fake tweets that were posted nearly broke the hearts of all of the Beliebers who pine for Justin Bieber by announcing the news that the singer was coming out of the closet.
The fake posts read: “Breaking! Exclusive: Justin Bieber to E!online ‘I’m a gay'” and “E! News Breaking: Justin Bieber arrested in Dubai due to false tweets with him coming out situation developing.” The news feed for E! News was filled with other fake posts, one of which claimed that Bieber’s ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez was supporting his lifestyle, all of which were removed by the middle of the day on Saturday.
E! News issued the following statement on Twitter, saying the reports were inaccurate. There haven’t been any further reports of fake tweets on the account, but E! News hasn’t posted any updates since the hacking, either.
The group Syrian Electronic Army has claimed responsibility for the hacking. According to Fox News, the Syrian Electronic Army hacks the news feeds and websites for sources they think are sympathetic to Syrian rebels. In the past, the Syrian Electronic Army has hacked websites such as NPR and BBC.
Bieber was on tour in Dubai for his “Believe” tour when the fake tweets were posted. Since Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, prosecutes individuals for practicing anything that deviates from the traditional heterosexual marriage, Bieber could have been in hot water because of the tweets. Fortunately the posts were removed and the Syrian Electronic Army took credit for the tweets before any trouble could arise from the singer. Considering some of Bieber’s woes lately, which range from receiving fines for smuggling a monkey in Germany and his tour bus getting raided for drugs, the last thing Bieber needed was more trouble.
The Canadian singer hasn’t responded to the fake E! News tweets, but the pop singer is probably used to being targeted on Twitter by now. Even if he isn’t usually the target of hoaxes like this, Twitter is filled with posts by users who slam him for everything from his music to his clothing style.
Bieber had two shows in Dubai, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, and then he will head to South Africa to wrap up his international tour dates before heading to the United States to perform.
