Zach Braff launches $2 million Kickstarter campaign for his new movie

Braff is receiving a lot of support for his fundraiser on Twitter and from celebrities such as former Scrubs co-star Donald Faison.

Seeing celebrities ask for donations isn’t anything out of the norm, but actor Zach Braff wants you to give him your hard-earned dollars for his next movie.

Braff is using a website called Kickstarter to raise $2 million to fund his next project, Wish I Was Here. So far, he has raised just over $1 million in one day.

This isn’t the first time someone in Hollywood has used the donation website Kickstarter to fund an independent project. Earlier this month Rob Thomas wrapped up a fundraiser he started with the website to raise $5 million to make his TV series Veronica Mars into a film.

According to Braff, the idea for using Kickstarter to raise funds for an independent film came from Thomas.

Even though Thomas found success using Kickstarter to raise the funds he needed, not everyone approves of celebrities using the donation website for such projects. Since the fans are the people who pay to see the movies, a lot of people think it’s ridiculous to ask them to fund the movie as well. According to one Twitter user, “@zachbraff using @kickstarter is everything that’s wrong with that site.”

Despite the objections of a few, Braff is receiving a lot of support for his fundraiser on Twitter and celebrities such as former Scrubs co-star Donald Faison and James Franco are helping spread word about the project. Courteney Cox referred to Braff as a “brilliant filmmaker” in her plea for support.

Braff co-wrote the script for Wish I Was Here with his brother Adam and the story focuses on an out of work actor who has to resort to home schooling his kids after he can no longer afford to pay for private school. Braff plays the role of the dad in the film. According to Braff, “basically it’s a story about a man learning to become a great husband and father and person.”

Even though Braff’s methods of fundraising may be controversial to some people, the film sounds like it has a lot of promise and Braff has had to expand the number of screenings available because there has been so much interest.
