Clinton receives award from gay rights group.

Former President Bill Clinton was recognized at the GLAAD Media Awards on Sunday.  The GLAAD Awards recognize “inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.”  The awards mainly focus on TV shows and movies that either include or promote LGBT issues.

Clinton was the recipient of the first ever Advocate for Change Award.  Some people considered Clinton receiving the award controversial because he backed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as president, as well as the don’t ask, don’t tell military policy.  Since leaving the Oval Office, Clinton has worked hard to advocate for gay rights.  Clinton credited his daughter Chelsea for impacting his views during his speech at the ceremony.

During the speech Clinton addressed DOMA–a hot issue in the Supreme Court right now–saying “I want to keep working on this until not only is DOMA no longer the law of the land,” which prompted someone in the crowd to shout out, “You signed it!”  Other than that one outburst, everyone else seemed supportive of Clinton receiving the award.

Clinton’s friend Mary Steenburgen defended him on the issue of gay rights saying, saying Clinton’s work since leaving office shows he has is committed to pursuing policies that promote a more equal society.

The Supreme Court heard arguments for and against same-sex marriage last month and is set to make a decision on whether DOMA is unconstitutional in June.  Depending on the court’s ruling, the legal term for marriage could be redefined for the 40-plus states that currently don’t allow same-sex marriages.

The award comes as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has hinted at a run for president in 2016. The former first lady announced her support of gay marriage last month, a move that some say translates to a major shift in thinking for the couple. Meanwhile, the former president has spent much of the past time focused on his foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative.

On a lighter note, Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence presented Clinton at the GLAAD Media Awards, and she accidentally messed up Clinton’s name, introducing him as Gil Clinton.  Clinton didn’t seem bothered by it and even jokingly said that he didn’t know why Lawrence had to introduce him since “she really was like 2-years-old when I became president.”
