Not happening.
Earlier this week reports circulated that NBC had confirmed a “Friends” reunion show. The show has been off the air for nearly a decade, so fans were excited, and the rumor had them wondering if Rachel and Ross ever tied the knot (or went on another break) and what Chandler and Monica’s adopted children would look like.
Unfortunately, “Friends” fans will have to call this rumor “The One Where the Reunion Didn’t Happen.” Co-creator of the show Marta Kauffman and NBC have both said that there isn’t a reunion show in the works.
“I’m going to clear this up—it’s not happening!” Kauffman said during a screening of the Lifetime movie Call Me Crazy. Kauffman went on to say, “‘Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore.” The popular show ran from 1994-2004, ten seasons, making it one of the longest running sitcoms in TV history.
As is the norm now, we can thank social media for the rumor spreading like wildfire. No one is certain exactly where the rumor got its start, but before it was squelched, the one-time reunion special turned into a full-blown reunion season set for 2014 and someone even photoshopped a poster for the special.
Adding to the legitimacy of the rumor, the news source Drudge Report as well as several local news stations posted links to articles on Twitter that supposedly confirmed the reunion show. “Friends” fans have posted all day on Twitter about how happy they were with the reunion news. One user posted, “It looks like NBC has confirmed that there WILL be a new season of Friends in 2014!!” THIS JUST MADE MY LIFE!!!”
Hopefully finding out the bad news won’t be too low of a blow. This isn’t the first time that “Friends” fans have been disappointed by false rumors. Back in 2009, a rumor circulated that Warner Brothers was working on bringing the gang back on the big screen. The movie was supposedly going to hit theaters in the summer of 2011, but never happened. The movie rumor picked up again in November 2012, but producer/director of the show Kevin Bright said, “There is absolutely, 100 percent no talk about a reunion.”
As disappointing as this news will be for fans who tuned in weekly to see what the Central Perk gang was up to, fans will have to continue getting their “Friends” fix by watching reruns on TBS.
