Is Psy's Gentlemen going to reach the heights of Gangham Style?
Korean pop star Psy blasted onto the music scene last year with his hit “Gangnam Style,” and it appears he has another smash hit in the making with his new release “Gentleman.” Last year Psy topped YouTube’s “Most Viewed Videos” monthly chart with “Gangnam Style,” and since releasing “Gentleman,” the video has garnered more than 100 million YouTube hits.
It’s safe to say that the long-awaited release was highly anticipated. Psy debuted the video “Gentleman” at a concert on Saturday at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium that was attended by 50,000 fans. The concert and video release was streamed online to more than 160,0o0 fans. These numbers don’t even begin to compare with “Gentleman’s” success on YouTube.
In the first 24 hours of the “Gentleman” YouTube release, Psy’s video got more than 20 million hits, almost tripling what Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video did in the same amount of time. Many wondered whether Psy would be able to come close to the success with subsequent hits after “Gangnam Style’s” success, but so far most of the reception to “Gentleman” has been positive.
Just like in “Gangnam Style,” “Gentleman” is upbeat and features a lot of dancing. The video features Psy playing pranks on people, including increasing the settings on a treadmill so high that a woman falls off. While many people were impressed with the new dance to learn and loved Psy’s style, some people weren’t too amused with the juvenile pranks Psy played in the video. Some viewers called the video “sexist” and “sophomoric.”
No matter what people think of “Gentleman,” Psy is pleased with his new song. “It was hard not to feel pressured but it was the best song I could make,” Psy said of “Gentleman.” Psy also added, “I am proud and thankful that the whole nation is giving attention to my new song, so I don’t even care if it fails.”
Failure doesn’t look like an option for “Gentleman,” considering it is getting off to a better start than “Gangnam Style” did. Of course, Psy wasn’t widely known outside of South Korea when that video was released, so comparing the two may not be fair.
It won’t be easy for “Gentleman” to surpass “Gangnam Style,” which is the most-viewed YouTube video ever at 1.5 billion views, but it’s safe to say that the video is off to a strong start.
