He said what?
Nearly everyone who has been through middle school knows the story of Anne Frank, the young girl who hid from the Nazis during World War II and left behind a diary of her experiences. People who hear of her story are usually in awe, which may be why people are outraged over a comment pop star Justin Bieber left in the guest book after touring the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam on Friday.
Bieber wrote, “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” “Belieber” is a term used to describe young girls who are fans of Justin Bieber.
While it’s nice that Bieber felt inspired, the fact that he felt compelled to make part of his comments about whether or not Anne Frank would have been one of his fans has infuriated people across the Internet and has generated a frenzy of hate tweets towards Bieber.
Rainn Wilson, star of The Office, snidely tweeted, “Who’s this Anne Frank & why is he visiting her HOUSE? Are they dating?! OMG!” -93% of beliebers.” Others have commented by calling him “egotistical” and “self-centered” for making the moment about himself.
Even though Bieber has upset a lot of people, Anne Frank expert and rabbi Marvin Hier has come to the singer’s defense. Hier explained that Bieber most likely meant that Anne Frank would have been a Bieber fan because she was known for keeping up with pop culture and loved Hollywood. “There’s nothing insulting about that,” Hier said. “She was very modern and she could very likely be his fan and on Twitter.”
People have pressed Bieber to apologize for saying he hoped Anne Frank would have been a belieber, but he has yet to do so. Instead, he posted a shirtless picture of himself targeted at the media with the caption, “breaking news worldwide @justinbieber just posted 2 shirtless pictures he must be going crazy.” The shirtless picture did little to change the opinions of anyone who saw his comment as self-centered.
The Anne Frank controversy is just another incident the teen has gotten himself into lately. Last week, Bieber received a lot of heat for sneaking a pet monkey to Germany and for tattooing someone without a license, which prompted Will Smith to come to Bieber’s defense. Smith hasn’t defended Bieber over the Anne Frank comments yet, but time will tell if he decides to take up for the pop star again.
