Facebook teams up with attorneys general to promote teen privacy

The new campaign was announced Monday by Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler at the Presidential Initiative Summit on "Privacy in the Digital Age."

Facebook has teamed up with the nation’s attorneys general to promote teen privacy through a new consumer education campaign. According to a news release from the social media platform, Facebook will work with the National Association of Attorneys General to help teens take control of their privacy and visibility while using the Internet. The consumer education campaign will offer both tools and tips to teens and their parents.

The campaign will have several components, which will be accessible on the Facebook Safety page.

Facebook’s “Ask the Safety Team Video” series features the answers to questions that the social media platform’s safety team are most frequently asked during educational events on Internet safety. These are questions that have been asked by educators, parents and teens.

Facebook has also created a “What You Can Do to Control Your Information” tip sheet that reveals to teens and their parents the top ten tools for managing your information on the social media platform.

The Facebook Safety page also offers state-specific public service announcement with the nation’s attorneys general and Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.

The new campaign was announced Monday by Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler at the Presidential Initiative Summit on “Privacy in the Digital Age.”

According to Gansler, teens and their parents should be given the appropriate tools to manage their privacy and information when they use Facebook and surf the Internet. Gansler added that the National Association of Attorneys General want this educational initiative to convince teens to guard their privacy. He noted that the attorneys general will also work to actively safeguard consumers’ online privacy.

USA.gov has a webpage dedicated to protecting one’s privacy online. The webpage notes that although it’s easy to get a credit card approved or conduct any number of other financial activities online, typing in this information also gives criminals more opportunities to steal personal data. In addition, companies can sell your information to other companies. The webpage offers a list of tips to manage your privacy online.
