She gets booted.
Awards shows like the MTV Movie Awards often have planned stunts to make the audience laugh, but a moment during last night’s MTV Movie Awards show left quite a few people scratching their heads and resulted in security being called in.
While Will Ferrell was delivering his thank you speech for winning the award for Comedic Genius, Parks & Recreation star Aubrey Plaza came on the stage abruptly with a drink in hand and tried to take his award away. When Ferrell didn’t give it up, Plaza walked back to her seat with her drink, which she spilled, and sat down.
“Aubrey Plaza, everyone,” he laughed after the actress went back to her seat. “Just like we rehearsed it. Perfect, it was perfect. Not too long, not too short. Right on the money.”
A few people thought that it may have been a stunt that went wrong. Most commenters suspected that Plaza was either drunk or trying to promote her new movie and that Ferrell was being kind in trying to cover for her at the time. Plaza had the name of the movie, The To-Do List, written across her chest.
MTV later said that the stunt wasn’t planned. Producers of the awards show had security come and escort Plaza out shortly after the interruption. After the awards show was over, during an interview Ferrell poked fun at the incident, saying he wasn’t quite sure what Plaza’s plan was once she was on stage.
Plaza mentioned the incident on Twitter, where she jokingly thanked Kanye West. Plaza was referring to the 2009 VMA show when Kanye West went on stage and took the microphone from Taylor Swift mid-speech and said Beyonce should have won for best recording of the year. Plaza didn’t get as far as West, though, since she neither wrangled anything away from Ferrell or actually said anything.
Assuming the acceptance speech crash wasn’t a result of a few too many drinks and had everything to do with promoting her new movie, Plaza’s stunt worked. Everyone who watched the awards show and remotely keeps up with entertainment news is now aware about Plaza’s movie. Whether that will help with ticket sales remains to be seen, but The To-Do List is set to be released on August 16.
