Timberlake remains at number one.
When it comes to music, Justin Timberlake has done it all. He has received six Grammy Awards and his studio albums have gone platinum many times over. Timberlake now has another accomplishment to add to his list, something that most of his competitors in the music industry will never have a chance to do–sing in a concert at the White House with the president in attendance.
During a celebration of Memphis soul music at the White House on Tuesday, Timberlake was among several artists who showed up for the “In Performance at the White House” series. In addition to Timberlake, other artists featured included American Idol’s Joshua Ledet, Queen Latifah, Mavis Staples and Ben Harper.
The performers took turns singing various hits from the Memphis soul era and when it was Timberlake’s turn to sing, he took on Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.” The president and his wife really seemed into Timberlake’s performance and Obama enjoyed the song so much that he was caught singing along.
The concert series wasn’t all about getting a bunch of talented artists together, though–it was also about highlighting an important period in our nation’s history. Obama talked about the importance of this era in music, saying that it brought together black and white musicians and helped with desegregation. He mentioned the first black and white musicians to get together in Memphis in the 1960s, Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper. “They weren’t allowed to go to school together. They weren’t always allowed to travel or eat together, but no one could stop them from playing music together,” Obama pointed out.
Before the concert, Michelle Obama put together a workshop where various students from around the country got to ask Timberlake and the other performers questions. The First Lady even gave the students a little history lesson about Memphis soul music.
The tribute to Memphis music is just one of many concert series performed at the White House. The “In Performance at the White House” series has previously focused on various genres of music such as gospel and country as well as individual artists, such as Elvis Presley. The hour-long concert will air on PBS on April 16 at 8:00 ET.
As for Timberlake, now that wooing the president with his soulful chops is over with, he has to focus on promoting his new album The 20/20 Experience and prepare for his upcoming tour with Jay-Z.
