Is Barrymore a role model for successful working moms?
Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore was born into the spotlight. She comes from a long list of famous Barrymore stage and screen actors. She starred in her first commercial at 11 months of age and was called a “natural ham” by director Steven Spielberg when she worked with him on the set of E.T. Now, the seasoned actress is working hard to try and balance her acting career with her duties as a first-time mother.
During a speaking engagement at Lucky‘s Fashion and Beauty Blog Conference Thursday in Los Angeles, the “50 First Dates” actress talked about what it’s like being a working mom who still wants to act and direct. Though she’s had a successful career as an actress, Barrymore said she can’t do it all if she wants to spend time with her daughter, Olive Barrymore Kopelman.
Barrymore told the audience that she can’t have everything. “It sucks,” she admitted, according to People Magazine. However, Barrymore said that passing on projects is the healthiest way to ensure that she has enough time for her family.
Though she said that she still wants to direct, the actress noted that missing out on the opportunity to watch her daughter grow up would be worse than having to give up on a project due to family obligations.
Barrymore said the she grew up with the belief that women can have it all, but she acknowledged that that’s wishful thinking in the real world. However, she said that when you focus your attention on one or two projects instead of dozens, your chance of success improves because of the extra attention.
Working women are happier than stay-at-home moms, according to a study released by the American Psychological Association. The study revealed that the happiest moms are those who work part-time. The study also found that both part- and full-time workers reported fewer symptoms of depression.
Here’s to hopping that Barrymore will always be capable of striking the perfect balance between her acting career and daughter Olivia.
