Beyonce, Jay-Z celebrate five year anniversary in Havana, Cuba

Jay-Z, Beyonce hit Havana.

Wednesday evening turned into quite the event for those living in Havana, Cuba, as R&B superstar couple Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary as only they could: with a succulent meal at the privately owned La Guarida, famous as a location in 1993’s Strawberry and Chocolate.

Accompanied by their mothers Tina Knowles and Gloria Carter, the foursome reportedly dined on typical creole fare that included fish, chicken, black beans and rice while their bodyguards stood watch outside, piquing local interest until news of the duo’s presence spread through the streets. The Associated Press reports that the resulting mass of gathered fans in Center Havana shouted Beyonce’s name until the performer emerged onto the balcony with a wave. Local authorities were called in to maintain order amid the well-wishing locals.

The couple, along with Beyonce’s mother, spent Thursday touring Old Havana, five years to the day since their private wedding ceremony in Paris. Photos show Beyonce sporting a nest of dense braids and a bright print romper while Jay-Z, ever stylish, wandered around in a Panama hat and cigar in hand, occasionally posing for pictures with schoolchildren. The appearance in Old Havana, according to local reports, drew an even larger crowd as news of the celebrity couple’s visit spread across the nation.

Local reports noted that Jay-Z and Beyonce visited a number of historic sites. The couple reportedly visited the  Havana Cathedral, built between 1748 and 1777, and walked along the city’s cobblestoned streets. The couple spent time speaking with local residents, while simultaneously declining to answer questions regarding their visit to the communist country.

The trip is a brief calm in a busy entertainment storm. On April 15, Beyonce will begin her Mrs. Carter World Tour in Serbia. Jay-Z, not one to slouch, will be supporting Justin Timberlake and The 20/20 Experience, the rapper having featured on Timberlake single Suit & Tie.

Not only that, but the mogul recently formed Roc Nation Sports with talent agency group CAA. Two big names, Yankee player Robinson Cano and the Giants’ wide receiver Victor Cruz, have already been signed.

“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” said the rap artist.

Some speculation has been made concerning the couple’s trip to Cuba. The Cuban government website announced the couple’s visit on Wednesday, fueling speculation that the trip has the endorsement of Cuban officials. The U.S. government currently restricts travel to the island, although groups including artists and journalists are sometimes permitted access. The New York Daily News reports that, while trips to Cuba for tourism purposes are not allowed, neither the artists’ publicists nor the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control would comment.

The two have one daughter together, Blue Ivy. She was born in January of last year.
