With only one month to go before needing to enroll in a 90-day rehabilitation program after pleading no contest to reckless driving in 2012, Lindsay Lohan shocked her legion of Twitter fans with the declaration that she is “officially” pregnant. At least, that’s what everyone thought as of Tuesday morning.

Speculation ran rampant on the existence of a little Lohan after the controversial starlet tweeted “It’s official. Pregnant…” What was not clear was whether or not the tweet, posted in the early hours of April 2, was simply an ill-timed attempt at an April Fools’ joke.

Fan reaction ranged from @thisqueenbieber’s “Wow, really? Lindsay Lohan is pregnant? Omg, can’t believe it,” to @TotallyTypeA’s “Is Lindsay Lohan really pregnant? Please tell me this was just a BAD April Fools Day joke!!!”

Some ten hours and 9,000 retweets later, the 26-year old actress finally addressed the “real or fake” rumors. “April Fools,” she tweeted. “Where’s everyone’s sense of humor?”

@marissaseville_ summed up the experience with: “Lindsay Lohan isn’t really pregnant, it was an April fools joke. Seriously? How freaking lame.”

Numerous outlets covered the story after a weekend of Lohan-heavy news, including a wardrobe malfunction in Brazil that was salvaged by strategically placed locks of hair. (The actress was in the country promoting the opening of a John John Denim store in San Paulo). She was later spotted smoking and DJing at a Brazilian nightclub on Saturday night.

Lohan is no stranger to public scrutiny, having been in and out of trouble with the law multiple times and subject to ridicule for everything ranging from posing for Playboy to the critically panned “Liz & Dick” TV movie. The pregnancy tweet was not well received, with most questioning the ramifications of such a situation should it have turned out to be true.

Lohan, who starred in 2004’s well received “Mean Girls,” has undergone rehabilitation at five separate facilities since 2007 and has until May 2 to check in for her next 90-day stint. Her upcoming film “The Canyons,” in which she stars across from porn actor James Deen, is due to release sometime in 2013.
