Will Fallon replace Leno?
It’s the question making the rounds of network television: Is Jimmy Fallon set to replace Jay Leno?
It seems, according to reports, that Jimmy Fallon, host of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, will replace Jay Leno at the end of 2014, when his contract is set to expire.
Fallon, who took over Late Night with Conan O’Brien (now Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) when Conan O’Brien left, is widely seen as NBC’s answer to ABC’s moving of Jimmy Kimmel to the 11:30 slot. Kimmel, who has attracted a large portion of the 18-49 demographic since making the move, could serve as the counterpart to Fallon once the move is complete.
While the rumor mills seems to be in full force, NBC has yet to confirm any plans. The network, which faced harsh criticism after its failed transition with O’Brien — who now hosts his own show on TBS — is already facing similar concerns with Leno’s planned departure. The current Tonight Show host has taken to ribbing his bosses, joking that he may seek to replace David Letterman on CBS. Leno, reportedly, is not happy with the proposal, although NBC executives are said to be fairly set on pushing the late night host.
It remains unclear who will replace Fallon once he makes the move. The former Saturday Night Live star has spent much of the past two years making a name for himself. Fallon has quickly built himself into a late night brand, interviewing everyone from NBC’s Brian Williams to President Barack Obama. Former TBS late night host George Lopez has reportedly said he does not have any interest in returning to host a late night show.
For NBC, the departure could spell doom for the struggling network. Leno’s ratings remain strong and The Tonight Show host has continued to edge out his competition despite going head-to-head.
